Information checked October 16, 2026, against Take-Two Interactive’s pre-order announcement. Independent fan coverage; not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft.
Two questions decide how smooth launch day is: when can you start downloading, and how much free space do you need? One has an official answer. The other does not, and most of what you will read about it is guesswork.
Confirmed: the pre-load dates
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement states the following:
- Launch: November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Digital pre-load: players who pre-order a digital version can begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026, so that they can play at launch on November 19.
- Physical copies: the physical version contains a download code inside the box and is available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading.
- Where it is sold: PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store and global retailers and storefronts.
In plain terms, pre-loading means the game files are on your console before launch day. The announcement ties pre-loading to being able to play on November 19, so we read it as a download window, not early access. A physical copy is a download code in a box, so you still need the same storage space.
BOXED COPY · ON AMAZON
Amazon has GTA VI physical pre-order listings. Check the platform, edition and delivery date on the listing, and plan the download for November 12, when Take-Two says physical copies become available. We have not verified price or delivery.

Not confirmed: the install size
As of October 16, we could not find an install size published by Rockstar, Take-Two, PlayStation or Microsoft. The Take-Two announcement does not give one.
Leaks and estimates (unverified): several fan sites circulate figures around 200 GB for PS5, and others guess anywhere from 150 GB to 300 GB, with a day-one patch on top. These trace back to unofficial accounts or reader estimates. One widely repeated claim of a specific figure on a PlayStation screen is not something Sony’s public store page shows. Treat every number as a guess until the store listing shows one.
A practical storage checklist
- Check your free space now. Open your console’s storage settings and note how much is free. Do not wait for the size announcement to find out you are short.
- Decide what to remove first. Old games you have finished are the easiest to delete, because you can download them again later.
- Plan for expansion if you need it. Both consoles support expanding storage, but each maker has its own compatibility rules. Check the manufacturer’s current guidance before buying a drive.
- Test your connection. A very large download over a slow line can take days, and the pre-load window is one week long (November 12 to 19). If your internet is slow, start on November 12.
- Leave headroom. A game needs space for patches and saves, not only the base install.
Storage is only one part of getting ready. Our complete GTA 6 launch checklist puts it next to the TV settings, controller setup and a day-by-day plan for the week before November 19.
Speculation: will the size push people to buy a drive?
This section is opinion, not reporting. If the final size lands anywhere near the leaked range, owners of the smallest console storage options will likely need to clear space or add a drive. If it comes in smaller, this will turn out to be a non-issue. Either way, the sensible move is to wait for the official store listing before spending money on storage.
What we will update
When PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store shows the real size, we will update this page with the number and the date we saw it. Dates and editions are covered in our release date and starting guide and our editions and pre-order breakdown.
