GTA 6’s Map Is Nearly GTA IV, GTA V and RDR2 Combined, Rockstar Tells Edge: Every Detail, Sorted

Edge magazine’s November 2026 issue (Edge 430, on sale October 29) carries a 16-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover feature. Writer Simon Parkin visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh and watched co-studio head Rob Nelson play the current build for about 90 minutes. The full feature is free to read on GamesRadar+. A long list of “new GTA 6 details” is circulating with it. Some of those details are in Edge, some came from earlier interviews, and a few we could not confirm anywhere. Here is the sorted version.

Verified in Edge’s feature (checked October 29, 2026)

  • Map size: Edge says Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map, and Rockstar says its landmass is nearly as large as the playable maps of GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined. Rockstar did not give a square-mile figure.
  • Interiors: co-studio head Aaron Garbut says there are “an order of magnitude more interiors” than in earlier Rockstar games.
  • Transit: buses and trains fully work.
  • Time: the day-night cycle is substantially longer than GTA V’s.
  • Police: a “heat” system tracks your description, clothes, partner, CCTV footage and weapon. K9 units joined a chase in the demo.
  • Launch: November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

If you only read one thing

The size number is the one getting the attention. But the feature keeps coming back to a different point: Leonida is built to react to what you do. People notice how you carry a gun. Police work from what witnesses and cameras saw, not only from your wanted stars. Jason and Lucia’s relationship moves on a four-point closeness scale that goes up when you spend time together, such as walking on the beach, cycling, going to the gym or just driving around. Edge also describes a “Criminal Profile” that runs from “Professional” to “Irredeemable”, and Rockstar says it shapes how the story plays out. A big map matters less than one where your choices change how it treats you, and that is the part Rockstar spent the most time talking about.

Official: what Rockstar told or showed Edge

Everything in this section is in Edge’s published feature. Either Rockstar said it on the record, or Edge watched it happen in the live demo.

  • Scale and density: about twice GTA V’s map, and nearly GTA IV, GTA V and RDR2 combined by landmass. Houses are dressed with photos, clutter and signs of whoever lives there. Garbut says he still finds places in the game he has never seen.

  • Roads and time: GTA V’s wide roads have been narrowed to feel more realistic, and sunsets and nights last longer. Nelson says GTA V’s timing felt too fast at this level of detail.
  • Weather: clouds move on their own, shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. You can see a storm in the distance and drive into it. Wind affects trees, clouds, waves, boats and aircraft, and pedestrians look for shelter.
  • NPCs: a Los Angeles-based team worked on Leonida’s pedestrians, with around 600,000 animations. Each pedestrian has traits such as temperament and aggression, and reacts to what it has seen and how you have treated it.
  • Police and heat: icons at the top of the screen show what the police know. Splitting up from your partner, changing clothes or dropping the weapon makes you harder to recognise. Edge’s demo also showed a stinger strip and a K9 unit.

  • Car theft: some drivers are armed and fight back. Newer, expensive cars can carry trackers, and a phone app called WAINK lists the models fences want. Part of your payment depends on the car’s condition.

  • Vehicles: every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine-health readout. Edge says cars go a long way before running low and refuelling is quick. A paid app, Scooter Bros, delivers your car with your weapons in the trunk.
  • Transit: buses and trains fully work. Head of development Phil Hooker says he has memorised the routes.
  • Smell: a reaction to bad smells, first built for one scene, is now a wider system. In the demo, Jason grimaced inside a house a dog had trashed, without any scene written for it.
  • Jason and Lucia: closeness on a four-point scale, plus the Criminal Profile described above.

Official, but not from Edge

Several items on the viral list are real, but they come from earlier Rockstar interviews with other outlets, not from this feature:

  • Over 170 animal species, including flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators: Rockstar told Game Informer for its September 2026 cover story. Alligators and flamingos were already in Trailer 1.

  • Tropical storms and hurricanes: also confirmed in Game Informer’s cover story. Game Informer says it does not know how often they happen or how they affect play.
  • Six-star wanted level: confirmed in IGN’s August hands-off demo. It is the first time since Chinatown Wars that a GTA has had six stars.

Reported: from secondary outlets or translations

  • The map opens up early: IGN reports, citing Edge through the GTA VI O’Clock podcast, that Leonida opens up relatively early and is not barricaded by story progress. We did not find this in the online text of Edge’s feature, so we treat it as reported.
  • Loud or quiet robberies, a lockpicking “snap gun” and key cloners for luxury cars: from Rob Nelson’s interview with Famitsu, as translated and reported by GamingBible. The same report mentions suppressive fire.
  • Weight and muscle change with food and exercise: from Rockstar’s interview with Dazed, as reported by Kotaku. Edge separately confirms gyms (with a membership) and that coffee boosts stamina and protein shakes help health.
  • NPCs with varied heights, body types, tattoos and fashion: from the same Dazed interview, as reported by Dexerto.

  • Wind that moves hair, water and swamp grass: attributed to Game Informer’s cover story by fan sites. We could not check the original wording. Edge’s own weather details are listed above.

Unverified: claims we could not confirm

  • “Exactly 10x more interiors”: Rockstar’s phrase is “an order of magnitude”. No one at Rockstar gave a number.
  • Enterable motels and high-rise elevators as a listed feature: a motel room appears in Trailer 1, but we found no Rockstar statement about which motels or elevators you can use.
  • Dedicated hacking tools: not in Edge, and not in the interviews we checked.
  • “Extensive underwater environments”: scuba diving is on Rockstar’s activity list according to reports on Game Informer’s story, but how much there is to explore underwater is unknown.
  • NPCs taking cover from gunfire: Edge describes crowds edging away or scattering and some people confronting you. It does not specifically mention taking cover.
  • “Refuelling at gas stations”: Edge confirms a fuel gauge and quick refuelling. It does not say where you refuel.
